Molds such as this were first created in the early 18th Century for the purpose of embossing straw panels, used for making boxes or decorative panels. Dampened layers of straw, sometimes coloured, were laid into the molds to create images in low relief, and straw work of this type is specific to the 18th Century. Whilst some molds do survive, it is very rare to find a set of four. Height: 10.8 cm or 4 1/4 inches. Width : 8 cm or 3 1/8 inches.
